“You look like Tony Montana!” shrieked one of the girls who’d joined us at our table. “Will you go out with me?” She was pointing at the white residue that looked a little powdery – caused by my obvious inability to use laundry detergent without looking like a coke fiend – on my polo top and she got a good laugh from the other people at the table. She was a funny girl. When we finally did get together, she recommended a Fuller Brush detergent that she said probably wouldn’t leave the marks on the clothes that had been caused by my own brand.

She liked to have fun, but not in a really mean spirited way. She was a green eco friendly kind of girl and the Fuller Brush products that she bought were all “phosphate free” or “more natural” or “one hundred and ten percent pure cotton” (I happen to believe that she added the extra ten per cent herself, but she explained that the mop head actually was tension twisted so the cotton was, like, concentrated. I still don’t know if she was kidding.). She had cleaning products from that company for every household chore or responsibility.

She washed my clothes for me one time, using her own laundry detergent. There were no white marks on any of my colors. It wasn’t something I gave much thought to, until she moved to Europe. Her career was in the midst of taking off. She hadn’t had much choice at the time.

We tried to make it work. We stayed in touch via phone and the Web, and I intended flying over there for a two week break later in the year. She had told me that she was very stressed, that there was a lot of pressure on her, like the cotton that had been tension twisted, I suppose, but not in a good way.

She ended things just before I told her I was going to book the flight. She told me that she was exhausted all the time, and she wouldn’t be able to sustain herself if there were late nights involved with my being in Hamburg with her. I told her I’d be there for her, that I’d support her, that she wouldn’t have to worry about entertaining me. But she ended things. Maybe she had found someone else. There’s always a self-questioning that comes with rejection. So I pushed my insecurities to the back of my mind and I hadn’t really thought about her for a long time till I happened upon a Fuller Brush stockist online. It was a good laundry detergent, I thought to myself, as I entered my details on the checkout page.
